Champagnat Movement of the Marist Family

Meeting of the fraternities of the ChMMF of Fortaleza

02/03/2010: Brazil

On 5 February, Br. Teófilo Minga, former secretary of the Religious Life Commission and current co-ordinator of Mission Ad gentes, met with the three fraternities of the ChMMF of Fortaleza. Also present were Brothers Salatiel Franciscano do Amaral, provincial counsellor of the ChMMF, and Gerson José de Lima, Director of the Marist College of Mondubim, where the meeting was held.

Br. Teófilo shared with all present the riches of the elements of Marist spirituality as presented in the document Water from the Rock. He also presented the new document approved by the last General Chapter on the vocation of the lay Marists of Champagnat: Around the same table. Among other points, Br. Teófilo emphasized the importance of the living of the Marist charism, the document on the laity and their vocation, and the joint formation of Brothers and lay people.

Information about and study of the documents mentioned was carried out at the meetings/retreats held in our Province (Brasil Centro-Norte). Equal importance was given to the study and living of the document Water from the Rock during the Year of Spirituality, and after this had concluded. We hope that the next years may be times for studying and living the new document dedicated to the Champagnat laity. Br. Teofilo’s presentation gave us an appetite and curiousity for exploring the richness of this document, the last gift offered by the General Chapter to the whole Marist world.

Thanks to the work achieved by Br. Teófilo for the Religious Life Commission, especially through the retreats, seminars, and different articles published on the web site. They were read in the fraternities and served to make us feel the universality of the Marist world, of which we are members. They were at the same time information and formation for us. By means of them, we discovered a little of the spiritual life in the congregation and the desire to grow more deeply in Marist spirituality, beyond the Year of Spirituality. This is already past, but its fruits are lasting. We hope to “extract” the same richness from the new document on the laity. For this, Br. Teófilo told us, we have to draw maximum advantage from the many initiatives which the Bureau of the Laity will doubtless be launching in the near future. Let us thank God for the memories and lessons we are taking home from this meeting and this visit.
