Monument to Saint Marcellin Champagnat at Salamanca

11/06/2007: Spain

On the 17th April a magnificent monument dedicated to Saint Marcellin Champagnat was inaugurated, in thanksgiving for the educational work that the Marist Brothers have carried out in the city of Salamanca for nearly seventy-five years. The street that passes in front of the College will now be called “Street of the Marists”, and the plaza in which the monument is found is called the “Saint Marcellin Champagnat Plaza”. It is also a way of commemorating the eighth anniversary of his canonisation. More than forty Marist Brothers and a great number of people were present for this event.

The Mayor, a former student and a father of current students at the College, who was the promoter of the idea “to exalt the figure of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, Founder of the Marist Institute”, spoke in a very amiable way about the work carried out by the brothers in this beautiful city. Then, Brother Primitivo Mendoza, Provincial of the Province of Compostela, recalled with moving words the beginnings of the work at Salamanca in 1933 under the direction of Brother Miguel Antonio, “inaccessible to discouragement”, and who, as another Miguel d’Unamuno, “remained bewitched by Salamanca.” Since then the Marists have had board and lodgings to develop their work in this city that is so important in the cultural history of Spain.

In thanking all those present for their support, the Brother Provincial invited them to consolidate their commitment to the service of this city: “Saint Marcellin is already in the soul and heart of many inhabitants of Salamanca educated during these seventy-four years spent in the different places that the Marists have had in the city. From now on, this beautiful plaza in Salamanca, now called ‘Saint Marcellin Plaza’, will preside in order to continue to be pathway and guide.” And he finished his speech by saying: “Marcellin Champagnat, who today plants his house in this place, will help us. Salamanca will continue to be an important place for the Marists with the College, the University Residence and the school attached to the “Luis Vives” University that continues the Marist tertiary formative tradition, being part of the Pontifical University. Mary, our Good Mother as Saint Marcellin called her, will be the star that enlightens and directs our way.”
Actions such as this help in continuing the hope-filled educational work of young people in order to form those who, later, will be the leaders of our cities.
