Development: a right for all

This year the international community celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development. The Declaration was proclaimed in 1986; its 10 articles enshrined the principle that development is a right that belongs to everyone, individually and collectively, exactly as all the other human rights and is actually necessary for the real enjoyment of the human rights. The Declarations, in fact, states: “The right to development is an inalienable human right by virtue of which every human person and all peoples are entitled to participate in, contribute to, and enjoy economic, social, cultural and political development, in which all human rights and fundamental freedoms can be fully realized” (art. 1).

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) launched in the past days a web page dedicated to the commemoration of this important anniversary. The web page features the text of the declaration, the calendar of the events, informative materials on the right to development and related thematic issues, highlights and information on the Un work in support of the right to development.
