Dear Marists

Spring has arrived and everything is new again!

The past month has seen lots of gatherings for Marist Youth Ministry and the wider youth movement in the Church.

The inspiring Marist Association was held in Adelaide, at which a good number of Young Marists actively participated, especially our awesome 'Marista Baristas' doing the daily coffee ritual for delegates; Members of the MYM Leadership team attended the Australian Catholic Youth Ministry Convention in Sydney; the Synod on Youth, the Faith and Vocational Discernment took place in Rome with young people and Bishops from around the world, including our own Superior General, Brother Ernesto Sanchez; and Marist Youth Ministry formed a resource writing group to commence work on piloting a new program for Marist schools for 2019.

All gatherings create their own excitement, energy and spirit. We need them to connect with others, to network and share ideas, especially garner new insights from others. North American chef Alice Waters says, "This is the power of gathering: it inspires us, delightfully, to be more hopeful, more joyful, more thoughtful: in a word, more alive."

For me, each of the gatherings above signify a deeper truth about ourselves as Marists and as Christians. There is a desire, almost a creative restlessness to not see things remain the same as they are; to participate collectively in building a more contemporary and authentic Marist Association, Catholic youth movement, youth ministry program, Church, Kingdom of God; to continue providing new pathways for our young people to walk the way of Jesus, as disciples on the journey of life and faith. God's Holy Spirit inspires us to keep moving and not be complacent!

The most essential skill to bring to any gathering, apart from myself, is that of listening. As Pope Francis pointed out in his closing remarks to the young participants at the end of the recent Synod on Youth; “the first step in helping the journey of faith” is “listening.” It is “the apostolate of the ear: listening before speaking.” Looking at the young people seated in front of him, Pope Francis assured them “as Christ’s church, we want to listen to you with love, certain of two things: that your lives are precious in God’s eyes, because God is young and loves young people, and that your lives are precious in our eyes too, and indeed necessary for moving forward.”

Speaking at the General Synod, Brother Ernesto also invited the delegates to consider the best way to walk the talk with young people, especially in opening them to explore a culture of faith and vocation: "In our days, we must approach this task humbly, more as disciples than as masters, seeking to co-create the dream of God, hand in hand with young people themselves." The work of discipleship is a collaborative one with young people and God.

I pray that through the Synod and all our ongoing endeavours in Marist Youth Ministry during this Year of Youth, we may become better listeners to Christ and to those we minister to in his name.
