Father Champagnat must have stayed in Paris only three weeks, because on 20th September he was in Belley for his retreat with all the Fathers (cf. OM, I, doc. 403, pp. 920-929). It was doubtless on this occasion that he invited Bishop Pompallier to come bless his new chapel. Immediately after this retreat and the election of the superior general of the Society, Fr. Champagnat set out for the Hermitage in order to prepare for the brothers retreat (Life, p. 202). It must have been during this retreat that Bishop Pompallier blessed the chapel and administered Confirmation (cf. Circulaires, I, p. 9; Circular of 27th August 1836; and Avit, AA, pp. 184-188, which gives the text of this circular and a description of the chapel).

N. D. de lHermitage, 28th September 1836

Father,

You are invited to attend the ceremony of the blessing of our chapel, which Bishop Pompallier will perform next Tuesday, 4th October, at nine a.m.

With my respectful greetings.

Champagnat
