Marist Mission Ad Gentes Project

The "Sponsor a Brother in Asia" campaign
You can help!

The project "Sponsor a Brother" | Designate your contributions

It takes an estimated $10,000 USD to maintain a Marist brother for one year while he is living in an Asian country, learning the language of the people, becoming familiar with the culture, and planning for an apostolic activity that will eventually sustain the community of which he is a member.

This amount includes:

Housing/utilities 3.000 U$
Food (about $7/day) 2.500 U$
Language studies 2.000 U$
Transport/other 1.500 U$
Medical Insurance 1.000 U$

When setting fundraising goals, consider the list above and ask the group, “Can we commit to supporting one missionary brother for a year in Asia?  If not, what contribution can we make that would meet part of the cost of maintaining one brother in Asia during this period of insertion?”

Donations

Marist Mission Ad Gentes ProjectThe Marist Brothers Generalate (Central Headquarters) in Rome will act as the coordinating body to collect funds coming from each administrative unit (province, district) and to transfer the funds to the brothers in Asia.  These are the steps to follow:

Step 1... Appoint a local coordinator or team that will organize your local campaign, collect, record and acknowledge the reception of donations from groups (schools, centers, communities, laity groups, clubs, etc.) and individuals.

Step 2… Contact the nearest Marist Brothers school, apostolic work, or local provincial headquarters to let them know you have collected funds for the Marist Mission Ad Gentes project: “Sponsor a Brother in Asia” campaign.  They will either give you the local address to which you will mail your gift, or you can give it to one of the leaders of the school, apostolic work or provincial office who will then transfer the gift to our General Headquarters in Rome.

Step 3… The Provincial Econome (or other designated provincial fund raising body) will record and collect the donation and will send it along with other donations to the General Econome’ s Office in Rome, Italy using established procedures for transferring funds indicating the donation is designated for “Mission Ad Gentes Sponsorship Campaign.”

Step 4…  Once in Rome, the contribution will be placed in a special, dedicated account: Marist Asia Mission Ad Gentes Fund.

Step 5… The Marist Asia Mission Ad Gentes Project Administrator will distribute the funds to the new Marist Asian communities now being established in Asia.  These funds will be used to help sustain the brothers in Asia, assist with language studies, and the establishment of apostolic works that will further the mission of the Marist brothers in Asia.

Step 6… In various and appropriate ways, the brothers in Asia will report on their activities.

Ideas

The “Sponsor a Brother in Asia”campaign can be initiated anytime.  However, certain church seasons and events lend themselves to campaigns which include “fasting and alms giving.”  Lent is just one example. The campaign is considered on-going…remember, according to the time line of the Asia Mission Ad Gentes project, a new group of brothers will be entering Asia roughly every six months right through to 2010.

The following fundraising ideas are offered as suggestions.  Given your own national background, local situation, culture, and traditions more appropriate fundraising strategies may be needed.

For schools and other apostolic works:

  • Include the “Sponsor a Brother in Asia” campaign in your school mission collection programs.
  • Sponsor a fee-paying event where a portion of the proceeds will be given to support a brother recently assigned to an Asian country.
  • Conduct a week-long solidarity campaign featuring one of the Marist Mission Ad Gentes Asian countries or one of the missionary brothers assigned to Asia who is from your country or province.

For groups and clubs supportive of the Marist mission:

  • Dedicate a portion of your meeting time to prayer for the project.  Take time as a group to learn about the Marist Mission Ad Gentes program, the brothers involved, and the countries they are assigned then talk about ways you can help them.
  • Sponsor an event where a portion of the proceeds will be given to support a brother recently assigned to an Asian country.
  • Take a week during the year and do a simple fasting exercise.  Give up one meal a day for the poor in Asia and the work of the brothers now moving into Asia.  Give the money you would have spent on those meals to the “Sponsor a Brother in Asia” campaign.

For communities:

  • Each day remember the Institute and the brothers moving into Asia in your morning and evening prayer and daily celebration of the Eucharist.
  • Do a simple fasting exercise and give up one meal a day for the poor in Asia and the work of the brothers now moving into Asia.  Give the money you would have spent on those meals to the “Sponsor a Brother in Asia” campaign.
  • There may be brothers in the community that have friends that would like to help the mission.  Talk to them about our Asia Mission Ad Gentes program and ask if they would consider helping the Institute advance its mission to evangelize poor children in Asia through education.
