Peter Gerard Carroll

I was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in 1958, the middle child of three; with older and younger sisters.

My mother had been a nurse but was a stay-at-home wife and mother. My father was a veteran of World War 2 and afterwards studied accountancy and went on to a successful career in business. He died at age 52 in 1975. My mother died at age 88 in 2007.

I received a Catholic schooling with primary education provided by the Sisters of Charity and Sisters of Mercy, and secondary schooling provided by the Irish Christian Brothers and Marist Brothers. I graduated high school in 1976.

At the completion of High School, I joined the Marist Brothers, started the Postulancy in 1977 and entered the Novitiate in 1978. I took first vows in January 1980. I then moved onto professional studies and completed a BA and Graduate Diploma in Religious Education. From that point, I spent 30 years involved in secondary school education as teacher, Head of Department and, for 15 years, as Principal of three separate schools. I took Final Vows in 1986.

I completed postgraduate studies in Education and Religious Education at the Australian Catholic University and Loyola University Chicago, respectively. The latter was during my renewal period in 2000-2001 when I also undertook the Marist Brothers’ international mid-life renewal programme at Manziana.

I have been the Leader of three of our Brothers’ communities and was first elected to the Provincial Council of the Sydney Province in 2003. I was the Deputy Provincial of the new Province of Australia when it was formed in 2012 until September 2015 when I took up the position of Provincial.

Jesus and the Gospels are our ultimate guide. We must live our vocations as truly as St Marcellin lived his.
