Antonio Ramalho

He was born on 3 December 1946, at Maceió (Alagoas, Brésil). He studied in the Marist school in his home town. In 1961 he entered the juniorate of Apipucos, in Recife. He did postulancy and novitiate (1963) at Lagoa Seca (Paraíba) ; he returned to Recife to do his scholasticate. He spent a year in Rome, as member of the Preparatory Commission for the 1976 Chapter. He gained a Licentiate in Philosophy at the Catholic University of Pernambuco (1977), and a Licentiate in Theology at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium (1977).

He exercised the responsibilities of vice-director, pastoral co-ordinator, and teacher in a number of schools. He has been director of the juniorate and scholasticate, Master of novices, Provincial Counsellor, and Provincial of the Province of « Central North Brazil ». He was vice-president of the Conference of Religious of Brazil and of the Latin-American Confederation of Religious.

In September 2000 he was appointed director of the International College in Rome, and in October 2001 he was elected Counsellor General. On 3 October 2009 he was re-elected Counsellor General.
